January 10, 2008 by courtneyphillips

“National Treasure: Book of Secrets” sends our archaeologist hero, Ben Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) on a globetrotting quest to find another secret treasure, all the while restoring his family’s good name.

The returning cast includes Ben’s archaeologist father, Patrick Gates (Jon Voight); Ben’s personal tech support and sidekick, Riley Poole (Justin Bartha); and Ben’s now ex-girlfriend, Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger), whose brief romance with the press secretary (Ty Burrell) of the president of the United States affords the gang the opportunity to search for clues in the Oval Office.

The new faces in the adventure are Ben’s mother, who also happens to be Patrick’s estranged ex-wife, Emily Appleton (Helen Mirren), a scholar of ancient languages; and a rival archaeologist and Confederate sympathizer named Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris), who boldly accuses a Gates ancestor, Thomas Gates (Joel Gretsch), of collaborating in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln with John Wilkes Booth.

Booth shot Lincoln on the same night that he and a co-conspirator forced Thomas Gates into translating a diary page the disclosed Cibola, the lost city of gold. In order to clear the Gates family name, Ben and the gang must prove the existence of Cibola by finding the long-dispersed fragments of a map. One of the pieces happens to be hidden in a secret book that is handed down from president to president.

Producer/director Jon Turteltaub deserves kudos for laying hold of the…keep reading

Movie Review: “The Bucket List”

January 9, 2008 by courtneyphillips

movie-review_the-bucket-list.jpg

Rob Reiner’s “The Bucket List” features Jack Nicholson as a cantankerous billionaire and Morgan Freeman as the winking, twinkling teller of truths. Neither role is a stretch for these actors; we have all seen this shtick before.

The movie kicks off with one of Morgan Freeman’s trademark “This is God speaking” wisdom-induced voiceovers. Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson), the rich SOB, and Carter Chambers, (Morgan Freeman) the car mechanic who once had aspirations of being a history professor, end up in the same room in the cancer ward of a hospital that Edward owns. Each of the men is given a dim prognosis, forecasting that each will be dead in under a year. Being forced to face their own mortality, the two end up writing a bucket list together-a list of things that they want to accomplish before they kick the proverbial bucket.

Some of the entries on their bucket list include:  (read the rest of the review here)

Did Rudy Guiliani Bury Cost Of Trips To Mistress?

Report: Giuliani Billed Security Expenses To Obscure NYC Agencies

Rudy Giuliani’s campaign is once again fending off new questions about an old affair.

According to Politico.com, in 2000 – as Giuliani was beginning the not-so-secret extramarital marital relationship with Judith Nathan, the woman who eventually became his third wife – he billed obscure city agencies thousands of dollars in expenses for his police security detail in the Hamptons off Long Island, where Nathan was living.

For example, in one instance, $34,000 worth of travel expenses were placed in the budget for the New York City Loft Board.

“These were records that the city comptroller tried to get in the past, but the mayor’s office said they couldn’t be released because of security,” Politico.com’s Mike Allen told CBS News correspondent Byron Pitts.

Giuliani’s campaign had this response, calling the story a non-issue.

“This is common practice,” the campaign said in a statement. “The NYPD is responsible for providing security for the mayor of New York around the clock.”

“It’s clearly the responsibility of the NYPD to provide the mayor’s security around the clock and that’s what they did,” Giuliani spokesperson Maria Comella told CBS News.

But the question isn’t about his security detail. It’s about how the expenses were billed.

“It’s coming out at the worst possible time for Rudy Giuliani, just as voters in Iowa and New Hampshire are beginning to make up their minds finally,” said University of Virginia political science professor Larry Sabato. “It reinforces his biggest problem, which is not just his liberal positions on social issues, but also the fact that he’s had a very messy private life.”

History of Halloween

September 24, 2007 by courtneyphillips

Antique postcard with common images of Halloween.

Halloween conjures up images of jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, witches, sweet treats, and children dressed in costumes for an evening of trick-or-treating. Across the United States an estimated 36.8 million children between the ages of 5 and 13 will participate in trick-or-treating. The United States produces 805 million pounds of pumpkins that get carved into jack-o-lanterns. Every October 31st porches across the United States get decorated with jack-o-lanterns; windows with images of ghosts, black cats, and witches; streets are filled with children in costumes who go from door to door with open bags yelling, “trick or treat” in hopes of receiving their favorite candies and treats. Millions happily participate in Halloween traditions each year, but what are the origins of the holiday?

The Halloween we know today began in Ireland centuries before Christ. Warriors called the Celts lived throughout the British Isles and north of France. The Celts lived off of the earth and like anyone who lives off of the earth knows, nature can be both friend and foe. They were at the mercy of the elements and winter was the scariest time of all. For the early Celts, once their harvest time was in, that was it; there was no way of getting more food. When winter began to set in, the Celts would begin thinking about their own mortality. As winter started, the Celts would ask the druids, or high priests, to pray for them. The most important night of prayer occurred at the end of their fall harvest. The Celts believed that on that night, the boundary between the living world and the spirit world was unusually thin-so thin that the souls of the dead could roam freely back and forth. This night was called Samhain (pronounced “SOW-in”) and was very important to the Celts. Samhain represented the transition from the summer to the winter. This transitional time was very magical to the Celts. On Samhain night only, the Celts believed that the dead could walk the earth once more. Not every visiting ghost was friendly so the Celts devised ways to appease these spirits. The Celts would travel to the edges of their villages with offerings. This would coax any evil forces away from their homes. They would leave foods and sweets outside as gifts for the dead. This tradition would eventually become trick-or-treating. This is also the origin of the fear of the dead that is associated with Halloween.  There’s more!  Keep reading…

Then, his pregnant ex-wife, Joy (Emmy winner Jaime Pressly), was facing mandatory time in prison for stealing a truck. This would have been Joy’s third strike.
